States are continuing to explore better ways to improve the health of their residents including utilizing new programs to better address social determinants of health (SDOH). The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released State Health Official (SHO) #21-001 in January 2021 that outlined opportunities in Medicaid to address SDOH. The SHO letter highlights that: “SDOH have been shown to impact health care utilization and cost, health disparities, and health outcomes.”
During this roundtable, we will discuss opportunities and potential barriers with regards to the collection and exchange of SDOH data, have an open dialogue about state priorities and programs to address SDOH, and outline how Medicaid agencies can utilize federal authorities and other opportunities to address SDOH, improve health outcomes, and reduce costs for their agencies. This discussion will also include strategies to improve integration between physical and behavioral health including new opportunities for mobile crisis intervention services from SHO #21-008.
