During the 2019 HIT Connect conference, the Virginia Program Management Office (PMO) team presented with its technology module vendors to discuss progress with the Virginia Medicaid Enterprise project. This session will provide an update on progress made and hold an open forum to discuss what went right and lessons learned with this modular procurement and implementation. The Virginia DMAS panelists will discuss the vision for the procurement and highlights as well as deviations and pitfalls that could be avoided. Highlights include process efficiencies, risk distribution, and the staffing of appropriate Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support vendors. Each of the vendor participants will also give a brief synopsis of their role and provide their perspective on lessons-learned from this first true fully modular state procurement.

Why should attendees come to this session?
· What are the lessons learned from Virginia’s modular procurement?
· What are the lessons learned from Virginia’s modular implementation journey
· What role did the IV&V play and was this role appropriate?
· How would the participants change the process to benefit all parties?
· How did the vendors interact and what is the appropriate role of the state PMO in mitigating cross module issues?

Key Takeaways
· Modular procurements, while eliminating vendor lock-ins, are complex and require vendors to work together in a well-orchestrated way
· Modular procurements and projects require commitment by all parties to maintain open communication channels.
